PART II MOMMY MAKEOVER: TUMMY TUCKS & LIPOSUCTION

Last time, I introduced how every mommy makeover should be different; unique to each mother’s own take on how to regain their old silhouette. This week we’ll talk about how a growing amount of new mothers are signing up for the “two-in-one” tummy tuck and breast augmentation surgery, inspired by celebrity moms who seem to bounce back into shape within a few weeks. But sometimes the standard “two-in-one” is not always the right option when considering a mommy makeover. The first concern many moms voice after giving birth is their belly’s reluctance to recover. How to Maintain a Flat Tummy this Summer

If you have recently undergone a tummy tuck, (or more commonly for those of us who haven’t!) maintaining a flat belly through the lazy summer months requires us to keep a couple of important things in mind. As much as we would like to think that summer is full of action-packed vacations and high amounts of calorie-blasting activity, a lot of times the majority of the summer is spent eating rich foods high in fat and sugar and low on nutritional value. Follow these tips and you will feel comfortable showing off your belly in a nice bathing suit all summer long.

Stay away from these foods & drinks!

I always say, “Food is medicine,” because what we feed our bodies directly impacts how we look and feel. Unfortunately, there are just some things that shouldn’t be a part of your summer diet, no matter how delicious or refreshing they seem. In order to keep the bulge away, you’re going to want to avoid foods high in saturated fats such as potato and macaroni salads, as well as anything that is deep fried. As good as they may taste, they are just torture to your belly. Avoiding a high sodium intake and carbonated beverages will also help to keep your belly from puffing up like a balloon. Instead, take advantage of ripe summer fruits and vegetables, like watermelon, berries, tomatoes and leafy greens. These will increase your anti-oxidant consumption, and minimize your abdomen.

Cardio & Crunches

You can do hundreds upon hundreds of crunches a day, but if you’re not pairing the ab exercises with cardio, there will be a layer of fat sitting on top of the muscle and hiding the definition! It is important to consistently burn the fat away with cardio while building muscle with crunches or sit-ups if you want to maintain a toned belly or even develop a six-pack!

Stick With It!

Maintaining a flat, toned belly requires a healthy diet and an effective exercise routine. In order to make the most out of your tummy tuck or healthy habits, you are going to want to follow these steps to keep your belly looking slim and smooth. While a tummy tuck can finally get you past that last speed-bump in your journey to a flat stomach, it is important to remember to maintain a healthy lifestyle afterwards as well.

Can a Tummy Tuck Help You Slim Down?

Study shows lasting weight loss after abdominoplasty.

Although lap band and other bariatric surgeries can help achieve and maintain permanent weight loss, they are designed for the morbidly obese with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or greater. The tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), a procedure that’s more readily available to a wider range of patients, has shown promise in permanent weight loss, especially for those who were overweight or obese before surgery. A recent study found that not only was weight loss maintained a year after the tummy tuck but that the procedure also resulted in increased satiety, the sense of feeling full after eating. Removing fat cells from the abdomen may lead to reduced levels of hormones affecting appetite, according to the study. And as anyone who’s ever tried it knows, portion control is key to losing weight. The study evaluated short- and long-term weight loss in 20 women undergoing tummy tucks; they had an initial average weight loss of five pounds due to the surgery. Fourteen of the women, who had BMIs of 24.5 or more at the time of surgery and were generally considered overweight, not only maintained the initial loss but shed some additional pounds as well. The study also found that sustained weight loss was more likely for women who had a greater amount of excess tissue removed at abdominoplasty. Further research is needed to confirm these results. “Whether or not long-term weight reduction is associated with abdominoplasty has been little investigated and remained controversial,” observes Dr. Rex Edward Moulton-Barrett of Alameda Hospital in Alameda, California, who co-authored the study. So while a tummy tuck may help you obtain a flatter stomach, there’s no guarantee that the rest of the body will follow suit.
