You probably know that liposuction is a fat removal procedure that improves body contours, but you may not be aware that there are different types of liposuction. Traditional, or tumescent liposuction is the most common approach, but technology has provided alternative methods that can treat more sensitive areas and reduce recovery times. VASER (Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance) liposuction is a type of ultrasonic-assisted liposuction that requires shorter recovery times and several other advantages over traditional lipo.
Dr. Lisa Hunsicker is a board-certified plastic surgeon who uses VASER lipo to achieve beautiful results for her patients in the Denver area. She prefers VASER over traditional lipo as it offers several benefits.
VASER Lipo vs. Traditional Lipo
In order to understand the benefits of VASER, it’s important to understand the distinction between VASER and traditional lipo. Both are fat removal techniques that begin with an injection of tumescent fluid, but each has a distinctive process that follows.
- Traditional Lipo –The surgeon makes an incision and inserts a cannula, which is a small tube. The cannula is connected to a machine that extracts the excess fat using suction. The surgeon will move the cannula back and forth to target fat and recontour your body.
- VASER Lipo – This technique utilizes an ultrasonic device to gently loosen fat cells for easier extraction via cannula.
Compared to traditional lipo, VASER lipo requires less recovery time. This is due to the following:
- Ultrasonic effect – The ultrasonic device used in VASER lipo vibrates the fat cells in the treatment area. Once loose, fat cells can be extracted more easily than with traditional lipo, which relies on the surgeon’s movement of the cannula to loosen fat.
- No damage to surrounding area – That same movement of the cannula in traditional lipo causes damage to blood vessels, nerves, and tissues in the area. While you can still get great results with this method, such damage increases your recovery time and the intensity of your discomfort after surgery.
Skin and Scarring
Both types of liposuction require incisions, which means there will be some scarring. VASER lipo requires smaller incisions than traditional lipo, which means minimal scarring. Dr. Hunsicker will discuss how to care for your incisions to reduce the appearance of scars after your procedure.
It is more difficult to achieve smooth, even skin with traditional lipo than it is with VASER. The ultrasonic waves of the VASER device promote the retraction of skin after surgery. However, it is important to note that considerable excess skin in the area may need to be addressed in a lift or tuck procedure.
