Choosing to undergo a lumpectomy or a mastectomy is a very personal decision for women battling breast cancer. When considering one of these breast cancer surgeries, it is important to consult with a plastic surgeon to discuss the cosmetic outcome of your procedure. Your general surgeon, plastic surgeon, and oncologist should work as a team to develop a comprehensive plan in order to determine the best approach with the fewest surgeries possible.
Dr. Hunsicker is a Denver-based board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon with a specialty in reconstructive breast surgery. For women who are considering a lumpectomy that may significantly alter the appearance of one or both breasts, Dr. Hunsicker recommends oncoplastic surgery.
We strongly believe in the importance of women understanding their options regarding breast reconstruction surgery. Dr. Hunsicker speaks with each woman to explain their options so she is able to make the best decision for her unique case. With less than 25 percent of women aware of all their breast reconstruction options, we believe in providing them with the education and guidance needed to achieve their desired outcome so they can feel like themselves again and enjoy life after breast cancer.
Oncoplastic surgery is a procedure performed at the time of a lumpectomy to sculpt and restore the appearance of the treated breast. This can often consist of a reduction of the untreated breast to improve shape and preserve breast symmetry. With oncoplastic surgery, the healthy breast is modified to better match the results of the lumpectomy.
This procedure is recommended for women who will be undergoing a lumpectomy, but want to maintain a natural, well-balanced appearance of their breasts. Dr. Hunsicker recommends this procedure for women with larger breasts who might not be great candidates for a mastectomy with implant-based reconstruction. Your specific case will be discussed carefully to ensure your safety and that you are a good candidate.
Your oncoplasty will be performed by Dr. Hunsicker at the time of your lumpectomy. Your procedure will be specific to your unique case and will consist of different techniques based on your condition and goal outcome. Dr. Hunsicker may perform a breast reduction or lift to one or both breasts in order to best maintain symmetry and a natural balance. The nipples may also be relocated to maintain the most natural-looking result.
Women often choose to undergo this procedure because it only involves one surgery. Because it is performed before radiation treatment, you avoid additional wound-healing risks that can occur with surgeries performed after radiation treatment. Breast symmetry can also be maintained without any time in between because both breasts are treated at once.
Most women will experience a six week recovery period after their procedure, however, you will be able to return home shortly after surgery—some patients may require just one overnight stay at the hospital. Within just one month of your procedure, you should feel well enough to return to work.
