Why might a woman choose to have labiaplasty and what does it entail?

istock 1137935606 It is not uncommon for the team at Revalla Plastic Surgery and Medical Aesthetics to speak to a woman who is unhappy with the changes that have occurred to their labia with time. Normal changes caused by childbirth, age, or other issues can make women feel self-conscious about the look of their vagina. In some cases, a larger or sagging labia can be physically uncomfortable because of rubbing and chafing. Situations such as these often cause our team of professionals to recommend labiaplasty.

What is labiaplasty?

Dr. Lisa Hunsicker, our board-certified plastic surgeon at Revalla Plastic Surgery and Medical Aesthetics of Littleton, Colorado, encourages women to ask about the labiaplasty surgery for vaginal rejuvenation. The labiaplasty procedure is performed to reshape the vaginal lips and remove excess skin for a more pleasing appearance. While this procedure is typically considered an aesthetic surgery, it may also be done for women who are experiencing discomfort and chronic medical issues such as urinary tract infections and yeast infections.

How is the labiaplasty procedure performed?

Dr. Lisa Hunsicker will provide patients with local or general anesthesia for their procedure. A V-shaped incision is made to the labia, which allows the doctor to reduce the size by stitching the sides together after a wedge has been made. The labia might also be reconstructed in a way to address the look of the vaginal lips and achieve the patient’s aesthetic goals. Dissolvable stitches are used, and the procedure is complete.

What can I expect for recovery?

Patients should always speak to their doctor about the expected downtime and recovery needed to reduce the risk of infection and other common side effects that can happen with any surgical procedure. Patients will also have a follow-up appointment scheduled to check the healing process and ensure the patient is recovering well after their treatment.
