What Happens During the Breast Reduction Procedure?

For Littleton, CO, area women, large breasts can be more than just a pain–they can inhibit women from participating in sports or finding clothing that fits properly. With breast reduction, many women are able to feel better and improve their quality of life. Dr. Lisa Hunsicker is a board-certified plastic surgeon who educates women on what to expect during their procedures and during the healing and recovery process.

What Happens During the Breast Reduction Procedure?

The breast reduction procedure typically starts with anesthesia to ensure that you are comfortable during the entire process. Your surgeon will then make an incision around the nipples, either in a doughnut-like shape or vertically down from the nipple to below the crease of your breast. The excess skin and tissue are removed, and your remaining breast tissue is reshaped to produce a smaller, more proportionate bustline. Your surgeon may also reposition the nipples and areolas higher on the breast to create a more youthful appearance. In some cases, liposuction may be used to remove excess fat from the breast area as well. The incisions are then closed with sutures, and you will likely need to wear a support garment or surgical bra during your recovery period to provide additional support while your body heals. Once healed, you should have reduced breast size and improved symmetry for an overall improved look.

What Can Be Achieved With Breast Reduction?

It is essential to note that although the procedure can help reduce physical symptoms such as back pain, neck discomfort, and difficulty finding clothes that fit properly, it cannot cure any underlying medical conditions caused by large breasts, such as macromastia.

What To Expect From the Recovery Process

After your procedure, take extra care during recovery for the best results. Immediately after surgery, follow any post-operative instructions given by Dr. Lisa Hunsicker. This may include wearing a special bra and avoiding strenuous activities or excessive lifting for several weeks. Dr. Lisa Husnicker will likely also prescribe antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection and recommend pain medicine if needed. Follow all instructions carefully throughout your recovery period in order to avoid any complications.
