Long eyelashes are an important hallmark of feminine beauty throughout the world. Unfortunately, eyelash hypotrichosis, or inadequate eyelashes, is a common problem afflicting many Americans. The lack of sufficient eyelashes can cause serious eye problems, as eyelashes work to protect the eye from dirt and debris. Women and men suffering from inadequate eyelashes can now receive prescriptions for Latisse, the only FDA-approved drug that’s been proven to make eyelashes longer, thicker, and darker.

How Latisse Works

Latisse is a prescription medication that may be obtained after speaking with a qualified doctor. The drug is sold in various sizes, which can last 2-4 months, and offers best results when applied correctly:

  • Cleanse your face, remove contact lenses and makeup, and apply any skincare products that you may be using
  • Place a drop of Latisse on the special sterile applicator
  • Apply the formula to the skin of the upper eyelid at the base of the eyelashes, moving from the inner area of the eyelid outward
  • Blot any excess product and dispose of the applicator

FAQ

Latisse is a bimatoprost ophthalmic solution similar to the glaucoma drug Lumigan. Physicians noticed that Lumigan tended to enhance patients’ eyelashes and began to investigate its active ingredients. The result of this research was Latisse, which was approved in 2008 by the FDA for cosmetic treatments.

Hair normally goes through active and dormant growth phases, and during the dormant phase no growth occurs. Latisse is a special product that keeps eyelashes in a perpetual growth phase. This enhanced growth produces amazing results within a few months.

The most common side effects after using Latisse are itchiness and redness, which occur in roughly 4 percent of patients. In rare cases, patients experience a darkening of their irises, the colored part of the eye. As a powerful growth formula, Latisse may cause hair growth to occur on other parts of the body, so patients should be careful when applying it. In order to minimize these risks, be sure to follow your doctor’s instructions.

Within 8–12 weeks, your eyelashes will appear longer, fuller, and darker than before. The full results appear after roughly 16 weeks.

Ongoing applications are necessary to maintain the new appearance of your eyelashes. Otherwise they will gradually return to their previous appearance.
