Botox®

Botox® Cosmetic is a treatment that can reduce or eliminate your frown lines, forehead creases, and crow’s feet. This is one of the most popular treatments at Revalla Plastic Surgery in South Denver. Botox® works by weakening the muscles that cause facial expressions. Once the treated muscles are weakened, the pull of the muscle relaxes and the overlying skin flattens. When done properly, you can expect Botox® to smooth wrinkles without creating a “frozen face” appearance.

How We Perform Botox® Treatment

Botox® treatment is performed in our South Denver office in less than 30 minutes. Small amounts of Botox® Cosmetic are injected into the facial muscles using a very tiny needle. There is typically no need for local anesthetic.

FAQ

Botox® Cosmetic (botulinum toxin type A) is a purified protein that temporarily reduces moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows, forehead, and around the eyes. Your injector administers low doses of Botox® Cosmetic directly into the muscles that cause frown lines. Within a week or so, you will notice a reduction in lines, which can last up to 4 months.

Frown lines and furrows are formed over time as a result of muscle activity under the surface of your skin. Botox® Cosmetic is injected directly into the muscle, temporarily blocking the transmission of nerve impulses and stopping muscle activity.

Although the results are noticeable, Botox® does not dramatically change your appearance. You are still able to show full expression, without the unwanted wrinkles or creases.

The longevity of results does vary. For best results, your doctor will evaluate you and then administer an appropriate dosage to specific injection sites. With ongoing treatments (2-4 times per year), Botox® will continue to soften facial lines.

After your treatment, you will be able to return to most every day activities right away. Occasionally people may experience a slight amount of bruising and/or swelling that can be alleviated by elevation and ice packs. It is advisable to refrain from exercise or lying flat for at least 6-8 hours after treatment. Most people notice that wrinkle lines are significantly reduced in a week, but it can take up to two weeks for some individuals. Results can last from 3-6 months.

As with any cosmetic procedure, complications from Botox®, although rare, do exist. The specific risks, as well as suitability, for any given individual cannot be determined until the time of consultation. While we hope this information is helpful, it cannot substitute for a consultation.

Whether or not Botox® is right for you is a question of where the wrinkles are you want to address.

Botox® works on dynamic wrinkles formed by muscle contractions under the skin. These occur on the upper third of the face. If you make a frown or squint, you’ll feel these muscles engage. This is the expressive area of the face. Botox® is effective on crow’s feet, the 11s (the vertical lines between your eyebrows), and on most forehead lines.

Botox® has no effect on static wrinkles. These are the wrinkles that show themselves at all times (not due to muscle contractions). Static wrinkles are due to skin damage from sun exposure and lifestyle choices, along with the changes from common aging. Static wrinkles need to be “filled” from beneath with a dermal filler such as Juvéderm®.

Botox® has been injected into tens of millions of patients since its cosmetic introduction in 2002. When injected by an experienced doctor with extensive knowledge of facial anatomy, such as Dr. Hunsicker or Dr. Nguyen, virtually everyone would be a good candidate for some wrinkle reduction with Botox. Generally, patients over 30 start to see these wrinkles forming on the upper third of the face.

Botox® and the Juvéderm® dermal fillers we provide can be combined into a single appointment, as they work on different areas of the face, and they work in completely different fashions. You can have Botox® to treat your crow’s feet around your eyes and then combine it with Juvéderm® Voluma to return volume to sunken cheeks.

You could also combine Botox® with various other non-surgical treatments, such as IPL photofacials for areas of darker pigmentation. The only thing you wouldn’t want to do is have another treatment on the same area you had Botox® injected.

Botox® is a single-session treatment. Once Dr. Hunsicker or Dr. Nguyen injects your Botox® in a short 10-15-minute session you’re done. Your results will fully take hold in about four days, and they will then last four about four months.

At that point, your body will absorb the now-inert Botox® and the muscles creating the wrinkles on the surface skin will begin to contract again, and the wrinkles or creases will return. That’s the time to schedule your next Botox® session at Revalla.

There isn’t anything you need to do to prepare. Botox® was deemed the original “lunchtime procedure,” as these injections take just 10-15 minutes and can easily be done over lunch. Since there isn’t any recovery, you can return to work or your other normal activities immediately.

The FDA cleared Botox® Cosmetic for cosmetic use on the upper third of the face. This is the expressive area where our muscles engage when we make various expressions. Botox® is effective for erasing crow’s feet around the outside of the eyes, the vertical lines that form between the eyebrows (the “11s”), and lines on the forehead.

Botox® is injected with a very tiny needle, and it is not injected to great depth. Most patients equate the feeling to that of a pinprick, and they don’t feel the need to have topical numbing cream or anything prior to their injections.

This depends on how much Botox® is used during your session. Botox® is priced by the unit. Ask Dr. Hunsicker or Dr. Nguyen before your session about how much they estimate you will need to address the areas you are having injected.

Botox® doesn’t work immediately; it takes from 3-4 days to fully block the nerve messages and relax the muscles in was injected into. From there, most patients enjoy results for about four months. This can vary somewhat depending upon the patient’s metabolism.
