Sometimes, diet and exercise is not enough to help patients achieve the desired flat and tightened abdominal area they desire. Many areas such as this are stubborn and fail to respond well to more traditional ways of improving the body. Thanks to continued advances in plastic surgery, Littleton, Colorado area patients have options available to them for addressing these problem areas: abdominoplasty.
What is an abdominoplasty?
Abdominoplasty is a procedure used by Dr. Lisa Hunsicker to achieve a tighter, firmer tummy area when diet and exercise fail to target this specific area effectively. During abdominoplasty, two separate procedures are performed:
- Liposuction – first, the doctor removes excess body fat from the stomach area. This is done manually with liposuction. During the liposuction procedure, a small incision is made in the midsection where a wand-like device is inserted. This device, called a cannula, suctions unwanted fat from the area into a canister. This is a manual way of removing unwanted fat quickly and easily.
- Tummy tuck – once the excess fat is removed, patients will often have excess skin remaining. To address this, the doctor will remove excess skin and then suture the stomach to tighten the area. The tummy tuck incision is made above the pubic area but below the stomach to ensure the scarring is covered by bathing suits and underwear. This part of the treatment is necessary to ensure the most effective tightening and reduction of excess skin.
Am I a good candidate for abdominoplasty?
The best candidates for this procedure are patients who are within their ideal weight range and want to tighten and firm the stomach area when diet and exercise have not been effective. This procedure is not a weight loss procedure—instead, it is used to contour the body and help patients target a larger tummy due to fat accumulation.
