Spider veins pose a problem for many people as they get older. Characterized by their dark, purple or red-colored lines on the surface of the skin, spider veins are most commonly found in the legs and are more likely to affect women than men. Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive injectable treatment performed at our Denver plastic surgery practice to reduce the appearance of spider veins with minimal discomfort and downtime. Sclerotherapy works by carefully injecting a sclerosing agent into the target vein, causing it to shut off and turn into scar tissue, which is then absorbed safely and naturally by your body. This process results in a gradual fading of the problem vein, resulting in clearer, younger-looking skin.

Sclerotherapy Vein Treatment FAQ

If you are considering sclerotherapy, you will discuss the treatment in detail during a private consultation to determine if sclerotherapy vein treatment is right for you. While this treatment is more common with women due to the fact that women experience spider veins more often than men, sclerotherapy can be performed for both men and women. Women who are pregnant must wait to undergo sclerotherapy until after childbirth.
The exact time your treatment will take depends on the size and location of your problem veins. Most sclerotherapy treatments can be completed in 15-30 minutes on-site at our Littleton office.
Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical injectable treatment. You may experience some minor discomfort during the injection process, but this typically lasts only 1-2 minutes.
There is little to no downtime associated with sclerotherapy. Most patients are able to return to their normal schedule immediately after treatment. Dr. Hunsicker recommends that you avoid any aerobic activity or exercise for the first few days after treatment, and some patients are asked to wear compression hose immediately after their procedure. Tylenol could be used to help manage any discomfort you may experience.
