Labiaplasty explained
Labiaplasty refers to a procedure that is used to address the inner and outer labia. It can reshape and reduce the size of this skin while achieving symmetry for a more pleasing appearance. It is not uncommon for women to experience asymmetric and enlarged labial tissues, especially when their body has experienced dramatic weight fluctuations, childbirth, or the natural aging process. Patients may also develop excess skin in this area due to their genetics. With the labiaplasty procedure, this excess skin can be removed for medical, cosmetic, and functional purposes.
Who might consider labiaplasty surgery?
We speak with many women who may be good candidates for this procedure. The labiaplasty surgery is beneficial for patients who experience:
- Asymmetry or large labial skin and tissues
- Discomfort during sex and other physical activities due to rubbing
- A loss of self-confidence due to the appearance of the labia and their appearance in certain types of clothing, such as bathing suits
- Problems with the contour of the labia
What can I expect from a labiaplasty?
The labiaplasty procedure is performed at Revalla Plastic Surgery and Medical Aesthetics in approximately two hours or less. The time needed depends on the technique used by our board-certified plastic surgeon and the patient’s unique anatomy. The procedure is performed with general anesthesia to ensure patient comfort. Women will have incisions made and dissolvable sutures used to address the excess skin. Dr. Lisa Hunsicker also discusses with patients aftercare instructions, including ways to care for the treated area and when a patient is allowed to return back to work and other physical activities.
