May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month and so our team at Revalla Plastic Surgery & Medical Aesthetics wanted to give you a few tips to ensure that you and your skin is healthy and happy all year long. Skin Cancer is one of the most treatable cancers when detected early, which is why it is important to check for changes to your skin and moles regularly. Proper skin care and sun protection can also play a huge role in keeping your skin healthy for decades to come. Your skin will thank you later!

Here are our tips for happy and healthy skin:

1. Check Your Skin Regularly

Take a good look at your skin today. Get familiar with birth marks and the appearance of your skin. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends checking your skin head-to-toe about once a month to see if any suspicious lesions or spots have appeared. Use a full-length mirror, as well as a handheld mirror, to effectively check your back and other hard-to-see areas. Get familiar with how your skin looks and feels. This way if anything changes, you will know.

2. Check Out Any Spots

We promise dermatologists don’t bite. In fact, in our experience, they are really nice and helpful. If you find spots, suspicious lesions, or simply want to get your skin checked, schedule an appointment with a dermatologist in your area. They can give you a skin exam, answer any questions you may have, and give recommendations. It may seem like a hassle at first, but caring and monitoring your skin is just as important as going to a dentist to check your teeth or visiting the eye doctor to check your vision.

3. Find an Oncologist That Cares

If your skin exam spots cancerous cells, have no fear. When skin cancer is spotted early, it is almost always treatable. So finding a specialist that is knowledgeable and understands your specific situation is important. Partnering alongside you on this journey, your oncologist will help create a treatment plan that is specifically designed for you and your skin. We understand that after chemotherapy or radiation, that your skin may be sensitive or vulnerable because we have worked with many patients like yourself. At Revalla Plastic Surgery and Medical Aesthetics, our medical aesthetician, Ruth Ann Roth, is specialty trained in Oncology Aesthetics. She is able to work carefully with your present condition to ensure that your aesthetic goals are accomplished as safely as effectively as possible.

4. Love Your Skin By Caring For It

Healthy skin is priceless and happy skin is our end goal. Regular exams by a dermatologist and prompt attention to any suspicious moles, lesions, or marks is just as important as cleaning your face and washing your body.

Revalla Plastic Surgery & Medical Aesthetics wants you to know that you are not alone if something suspicious appears.
